Does CrossRef use abbreviated journal title names as defined by Index Medicus?

Hi, and thanks for your question.

Like all other metadata, the journal title abbreviations supplied along with registered content items in Crossref are determined entirely by the item’s publisher. We don’t require that they use the abbreviated titles from Index Medicus, or elsewhere. They can, and some surely do. But, we don’t enforce that.

Our basic guidance is that the journal title abbreviations should be whichever the publisher believes would be most likely used in citations.

Also note that our schema allows multiple journal title abbreviations (up to 10) per journal title.
