Synchronizing Crossref metadata update with ORCID

I am interested in how Crossref updates synchronize with ORCID.

So, for example, if there is an update to the list of contributors to an item I can submit the new, updated metadata to Crossref under the same DOI. Crossmark will ensure a relationship between the two versions using the data and the type of update (based on the schema).

Will this change automatically push to ORCID? How will it appear on the ORCID platform? Will the original item on ORCID be updated now including the names of the new contributors or two different items will be present for the two versions?

I know this is more than one question but I feel they are closely related and I am interested in understanding the underlying process behind metadata updates. Thanks!

Hello @marton-balazs-kovacs ,

Thanks for your message, and my apologies for the glacial response time. This category in the forum was not previously configured for notifications, which we have since fixed, so our support team was not notified about your message when you asked it.

First off, not all Crossref metadata is captured within the metadata that ORCID displays in authors’ ORCID records.

On your question about versions, I believe in the question above you are only asking about one DOI with different versions and how those different versions would be reflected in the Crossmark metadata and, then, how that Crossmark metadata would be pushed to and displayed in ORCID. So, in this hypothetical example, the versions of the DOI in question must not have significant differences between the two versions (since, if there were significant differences between the versions that would change the way the work was cited and thus necessitate the registration of two distinct DOIs with us). In this hypothetical example, the versions would be captured in the Crossmark metadata registered with us, but not in the metadata displayed in the ORCID record.

I found a random example DOI with Crossmark metadata so you could see this in action:

DOI: 10.6028/NIST.CSWP.30
ORCID iD: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9978-9050

Here’s a screenshot of the complete metadata record registered with Crossref for DOI 10.6028/NIST.CSWP.30:

And, the metadata in that author’s ORCID profile:

To be thorough, I also wanted to address versions that have two distinct DOIs registered with us that are connected with the isVersionOf relationship. Unfortunately, that relationship metadata is also missing from the ORCID metadata. Again, here’s a random example DOI with an isVersionOf relationship in its metadata:

DOI: 10.20944/preprints202308.0014.v1
ORCID iD: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6918-5459

And, the complete metadata record registered with Crossref for DOI 10.20944/preprints202308.0014.v1:

And, the metadata in that author’s ORCID profile:

Will this change automatically push to ORCID? How will it appear on the ORCID platform? Will the original item on ORCID be updated now including the names of the new contributors or two different items will be present for the two versions?

No. Unfortunately, this Crossref metadata would not appear in ORCID.

Warm regards,
Isaac

Again, in the spirit of being thorough, let me also address two more general questions about metadata updates from Crossref to ORCID:

  1. If an author has had a work added to their ORCID record via Auto-update and that work’s metadata are changed at a later date, do the updates get pushed to ORCID?

Yes. Like I said above, not all metadata in Crossref is made available in an author’s ORCID profile, but if the metadata is in ORCID it will be updated.

  1. If an author (along with their ORCID iD) is added to a work’s author list at any point after another author has already added the work to their ORCID record via Auto-update, does the newly added author also get an Auto-update notification?

Yes, as long as the author in question has enabled notifications in their ORCID profile.

Warm regards,
Isaac
